Catching the trout
There are three known trout rivers in Kuusamo; Kitka, Oulanka and Kuusinki rivers.
The journey of the trout
Trouts travel they way to the the rivers of Kuusamo from Russia from the lakes Paanajärvi and Pääjärvi.
Trouts are born in the rivers in Finland, where they spent the first 3-5 years of their life and after that they go down to the big lakes of Russia.
When they have gained size and age the return to the rivers in Finland.
Greyling
Greyling can be found in rivers and lakes.
Greyling can be usually found in the calm parts of rivers and lakes. Common whitefish can also be found in the same places.
Northern pike is the most common predator fish in Kuusamo.
How to catch a northern pike? Best time to catch one is either early morning or late evening. Best way to catch one is to use a good size plug, preferably 10 to 15 cm. Find a cove with lots of waterplants, since northern pike likes to hide and attack for from its hiding place. Larger pikes can be found in deeper waters.Takaisin
Common Whitefish
This delicious fish is usually easiest to catch with nets, but trolling especially during the spring can give results. Common whitefish lives in swarms and catching one from the area usually means that there is more to be catched.
Angling
The largest angling lakes in Kuusamo are Kuusamo, Muo, Irni, Kero, Ii, Joukamo and Kiitämäjärvi. The simplest form of angling is to use a rowboat and have few lures in the water following the boat while you row. By changing the speed you tempt the fish to follow the lures. This is a very efficient way to catch northern pikes. Remember to bring snacks with you.
